It was 40 years ago today that 170.000 Soviet Russian forces from the Soviet Union, Poland and East Germany invaded Czechoslovakia. The distant past does not seem so distant in light of the recent invasion of Russia into Georgia as of late. People here are very sensitive to the whole situation as is
not that long ago that the Czech Republic and Slovak Republic have been free nations (since 1989) when the Soviet empire had collapsed. Nerves are jangled and people are resistant to the latest agreement to have a United States missile defense system to be based in the Czech Republic and Poland. Poland signed the deal yesterday and the Czech government has agreed but the people are against it. Demonstrations and starvation strikes have been going for months. The reality is that with Russian now angered with the deal, they have threatened to turn their missiles toward Poland and the Czech Republic (not that it would take much for the Russians to turn them any direction they wanted anyway). One feels the temperature dropping into the shadows of the cold war all over again. We can pray that it will not happen and that peace will be restored and that a free and independent Europe can remain that way.
